Announcements-April 27-May 1

We have almost made it to May!  Well done!

Students are reminded that the assignments are being provided at the beginning of the week to be completed the following Monday. Part of online learning is for students to develop their time management skills to fully complete assignments and develop their independent learning habits. Students should be able to work through their assignments by reading and following the provided instructions, complete the work thoroughly and with effort to meet the criteria of the tasks. Students are required to spend 5 hours during the week to complete the assigned work for ELA and MATH. Many students are receiving their feedback from previous week's assignments which can be viewed in the Google Classroom classwork section. Assignments that are not completed or are submitted with no work entered, obviously, will not meet the grade level criteria.

Looking for extra work for students during the week when their assignments are completed and submitted?

  • Students have all been provided IXL access with login information through their math classes and can be used to provide extra practice and support in Math.

Next Google MEET Schedule:

  • Grade 5 Math will be: Wednesday, April 29 at 11:00 am
The link will be emailed to you a 5 minutes prior to the meet.  This week is "Hats on for Mental Health" and students are invited to wear a hat to Wednesday's Google Meet.

Math Current Weekly Work:
  • Review of estimation and operation strategies
  • Introduction and review of FRACTIONS (vocabulary and concepts)

Thank you for your continued support during this pandemic.

Announcements

April 17, 2020

With every week we are learning and growing as we transition to this new mode of learning.  When we gather in Google Meet for Grade 5 Math, I will email/post the code approximately 5 minutes before our start time.  After coordinating with classes and teachers we will try the following schedule in hopes that it works for the time being.

Grade 5 Math Meet:
Wednesdays at 11 am

Some students have mentioned that it is overwhelming to check their GMail daily and deal with the inbox.  A suggestion I have to help manage this is to delete notifications after you have read them and answered the emails that need a response.  So, delete what you do not need to keep your inbox manageable.

Grade 5 Math-Current Work:

  • Review of Multiplication Strategies
  • Develop Division Strategies
  • Practice and use estimation strategies for each operation

There are time throughout the day that I have dedicated to replying to emails.  I look most mornings between 8:30-9:00 am.  I also spend several other times throughout the day checking assignments and emails around scheduled meetings.  Monday-Thursday I do a final check before 3:10.  Friday, my final check is before 12:30.  If you message me on a weekend I will respond on the first workday back.

Many students have emailed me with questions about their work and I do my best to answer and support them as promptly as possible.

I hope this information helps you as we continue this transition in our learning.

April 15, 2020-Google Meet

Google Meet Updates!
Since it is a short week, here is the schedule for our next Google Meet:
Wednesday, April 15 starting at 1:00 until 1:40 pm. I will send the link to your email 5 minutes prior to our Meet time.

These Grade 5 Math Meets are for you to ask questions, get clarification for your assignments, and I will show or demonstrate some important things regarding the online learning and using Google Classroom.

Google Meet Tips to Remember:
· Find a space so you are focused during the Google Meet
· Remember to MUTE yourself when you enter the classroom.
· Wait for me to call on you to un-mute so only one student talks at one time
· Look into the camera when you are talking
· If you have a question or a comment and it is not your turn to share, type it into the text box to the right of the screen.
· Do not type random texts into the chat feature. Wave to say hello, don’t type it.

Google Meet

Google Meet

Dear Families,

On Wednesday, April 8, I will be hosting a "practice" Google Meet session from 9:30-10:30am. Students will always be invited into their Google Meet sessions through a link provided to them through their GMAIL account (student@educbe.ca).  Please read below for some digital citizenship reminders.

As we move into our Google Classroom environment, please be aware of a few things in relation to Digital Citizenship

We want to encourage a positive learning environment where posts and comments are connected to the assignments and curriculum. Google Classroom and Google Meet is not the place to post items you would normally post on other digital platforms. It is a school classroom and all posts need to be school appropriate. During our Meet session we want to encourage discussion that is engaging and relevant to the learning.

Students who are not adhering to the school digital citizenship plan, that was signed at the beginning of the year, will be notified by their teacher. Please see the etiquette images below for tips.

We are committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.

Here is an additional link on accessing G Suite for Education and Gmail support through the CBE Website: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/support/Pages/Google-Apps-Gmail.aspx where students are also provided tips on Google Meet as well as etiquette when in the virtual environment.  Please review and talk about the guidelines for digital citizenship as students are increasing their time online.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time of transition.  If you have any questions please reach out and contact me (clstoesz@cbe.ab.ca) and I will do my best to support in any way that I can.

Sincerely,
Ms. Stoesz

Google Classroom Learning-Ready, Set, Go!

Dear Families,

This has been a busy week of planning and setting things up in our new online classroom environment in Google Classroom.  It is so great to have so many of you in the Google Classroom. We are still missing a couple of students so if you can touch base with your friends and classmates to see if they have had a chance to join that would be much appreciated.

The Google Classroom is set up for weekly assignments in Math (each Math teacher has set up another section for this). Each student should be enrolled in their Math Google Classroom. Assignments are completed right in the platform without having to download or move files. Every assignment we post will be automatically create a student folder. All that the student needs to do is submit it and click on "Mark as done" button which will always be located on the right side of their screen.

Sincerely,
Ms. Stoesz
