Students have a survey that needs to be completed regarding input and suggestions for online learning using Google Classroom. Please complete as soon as possible.

Students are reminded that the assignments are being provided at the beginning of the week to be completed the following Monday. Part of online learning is for students to develop their time management skills to fully complete assignments and develop their independent learning habits. Students should be able to work through their assignments by reading and following the provided instructions, complete the work thoroughly and with effort to meet the criteria of the tasks. Students are required to spend 5 hours during the week in total to complete the assigned work for ELA and MATH.  Students might consider completing one Math assignment per day as the entire week's work does not need to be completed in one day.  Many students are receiving their marks and feedback from previous weeks' assignments which can be viewed in the Google Classroom classwork section. Assignments not completed or are submitted with no work entered, obviously, will not meet the grade level criteria.

Upcoming Google MEET Schedule:

  • Grade 5 Math will be: Wednesday, May 6 at 11:00 am
The link to the Google Meet will be emailed to students 5 minutes prior to the meeting.

Math Current Weekly Work:
  • Review of estimation and operation strategies
  • FRACTIONS (vocabulary and concepts, comparing and ordering fractions, fractions to decimals).
Looking for extra work for students during the week when their assignments are completed and submitted?
  • Students have all been provided IXL access with login information through their math classes and can be used to provide extra practice and support in Math.
Spirit Week : Costume Week --class picture will be on Wednesday's Google Meet. I am looking forward to seeing your outfits and chatting about them!

April 17, 2020

With every week we are learning and growing as we transition to this new mode of learning.  When we gather in Google Meet for Grade 5 Math, I will email/post the code approximately 5 minutes before our start time.  After coordinating with classes and teachers we will try the following schedule in hopes that it works for the time being.

Grade 5 Math Meet:
Wednesdays at 11 am

Some students have mentioned that it is overwhelming to check their GMail daily and deal with the inbox.  A suggestion I have to help manage this is to delete notifications after you have read them and answered the emails that need a response.  So, delete what you do not need to keep your inbox manageable.

Grade 5 Math-Current Work:

  • Review of Multiplication Strategies
  • Develop Division Strategies
  • Practice and use estimation strategies for each operation

There are time throughout the day that I have dedicated to replying to emails.  I look most mornings between 8:30-9:00 am.  I also spend several other times throughout the day checking assignments and emails around scheduled meetings.  Monday-Thursday I do a final check before 3:10.  Friday, my final check is before 12:30.  If you message me on a weekend I will respond on the first workday back.

Many students have emailed me with questions about their work and I do my best to answer and support them as promptly as possible.

I hope this information helps you as we continue this transition in our learning.

Google Meet-April 15, 2020

Google Meet Updates!
Since it is a short week, here is the schedule for our next Google Meet:
Wednesday, April 15 starting at 1:00 until 1:40 pm. I will send the link to your email 5 minutes prior to our Meet time.

These Grade 5 Math Meets are for you to ask questions, get clarification for your assignments, and I will show or demonstrate some important things regarding the online learning and using Google Classroom.

Google Meet Tips to Remember:
· Find a space so you are focused during the Google Meet
· Remember to MUTE yourself when you enter the classroom.
· Wait for me to call on you to un-mute so only one student talks at one time
· Look into the camera when you are talking
· If you have a question or a comment and it is not your turn to share, type it into the text box to the right of the screen.
· Do not type random texts into the chat feature. Wave to say hello, don’t type it.

Reminders:

April 9, 2020

Hello everyone,

This is a reminder that Friday (tomorrow) is the Good Friday Holiday and Monday is a Professional Learning Day for teachers.  This means that next week we won't have classes until Tuesday.  I wish you a wonderful long weekend and I will connect with you again on Tuesday.

Please remember to answer the Feedback Question in Google Classroom about the best time for us to connect on Google Meet going forward.

Take care,
Ms. Stoesz

Google Meet

Dear Families,

On Wednesday, April 8, I will be hosting a "practice" Google Meet session from 9:30-10:30am. Students will always be invited into their Google Meet sessions through a link provided to them through their GMAIL account (student@educbe.ca).  Please read below for some digital citizenship reminders.

As we move into our Google Classroom environment, please be aware of a few things in relation to Digital Citizenship

We want to encourage a positive learning environment where posts and comments are connected to the assignments and curriculum. Google Classroom and Google Meet is not the place to post items you would normally post on other digital platforms. It is a school classroom and all posts need to be school appropriate. During our Meet session we want to encourage discussion that is engaging and relevant to the learning.

Students who are not adhering to the school digital citizenship plan, that was signed at the beginning of the year, will be notified by their teacher. Please see the etiquette images below for tips.

We are committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.

Here is an additional link on accessing G Suite for Education and Gmail support through the CBE Website: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/support/Pages/Google-Apps-Gmail.aspx where students are also provided tips on Google Meet as well as etiquette when in the virtual environment.  Please review and talk about the guidelines for digital citizenship as students are increasing their time online.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time of transition.  If you have any questions please reach out and contact me (clstoesz@cbe.ab.ca) and I will do my best to support in any way that I can.

Sincerely,
Ms. Stoesz

Google Classroom Learning-Ready, Set, Go!

Dear Families,

This has been a busy week of planning and setting things up in our new online classroom environment in Google Classroom.  It is so great to have so many of you in the Google Classroom. We are still missing a couple of students so if you can touch base with your friends and classmates to see if they have had a chance to join that would be much appreciated.

The Google Classroom is set up for weekly assignments in Math (each Math teacher has set up another section for this). Each student should be enrolled in their Math Google Classroom. Assignments are completed right in the platform without having to download or move files. Every assignment we post will be automatically create a student folder. All that the student needs to do is submit it and click on "Mark as done" button which will always be located on the right side of their screen.

Sincerely,
Ms. Stoesz

      • Compare probabilities and make predictions.
      • Solve problems about probability.
      • Design spinners to match probabilities.
      December 10
Practice and review for the unit test. Use these questions to help you.

      December 9
Unit Test on Wednesday. Review and practice using the work you have done this unit. Today we reviewed the vocabulary and some of the parts of the graph that students need to include when they construct their own.

Reminder that all probability games are due Friday, December 13. Review the project outline to make sure all parts and write ups are complete.

      December 5
Design your own spinner game. Read the outline (orange paper) and review the rubric. Some students have chosen to work in partners and have all agreed this is an equal work project. In choosing to work in partners, they also agree that the work not done in class during the week will need to be done as homework so they must be able to meet together to have their game completed and ready to play by Friday, December 13.

*Make sure to practice and review for the unit test next week.

      December 4
Students need to design three different spinners with a minimum of 4 sections that will result in the colour green occurring the most often.
*Make sure to practice and review for the unit test next week.

      December 3
Practice solving problems with probability. Complete questions 3, 4 and 5 for practice. Students are asked to find some items to create their own mystery bags to use for probability. Use a bag that is not see through and find some similar items to create their own probability activity to test out.

      December 2
Practice using and designing spinners for a particular outcome.

      November 28
Students continued to review the vocabulary to describe the probability for an event. Today they worked through experiments to use different types of spinners.

      November 27
Students predicted the probability of an event occurring using mathematical reasoning (theoretical probability) and then tried to see if it would actually occur (experimental probability). Task was to roll two 6-sided dice twenty times to find the sums.

      November 26
Students were introduced to probability vocabulary and they practiced using the words in a variety of situations. Students are working on sorting events into impossible-possible-certain on a probability line.

      November 21
Students have been practicing their math facts by challenging their peers to a game of Multiplication Tic Tac Toe and trying to get four in a row. Today, they were tasked to create their own game board after using two different versions. They had to create their own, identify the changes they made to create their version and the reasons for the changes they made. Most students completed in class to test their gameboards with their peers. Those who did not finish, this is for homework to have completed for Monday.

      November 18
Students completed a mid unit assessment to check their understanding and skills related to creating and analyzing bar and double bar graphs. Many demonstrated each of the necessary parts of a graph to represent the data they were provided.

Extra Practice to review reading and analyzing bar graphs:
Students continue to develop their mastery of learning their math facts up to 81 using a partner challenge game called, "Tic-Tac-Toe" which has provided them with strategies and much needed practice to learn their facts.

      November 12
Students collected data from both grade 5 classes and had to graph the data using a double bar graph. The graph needs specific parts to be completed (title, labels, scale, data, organization) and analyze and interpret their data in three ways (minimum).

      • Practicing basic math facts up to 81 can be incorporated at home to help build up your child's recall so they can use them in upcoming units.

      November 5
Students continue to work on developing accurate recall of math multiplication facts up to 81. Continue to practice at home. Students will be guided to create a double bar graph and work on interpreting the data from the graph. Here are the student learning goals for this section. Students absent miss out on instruction and practice and they will need to catch up on their missed work.

      October 29
Students were guided step-by-step how to create a graph and all of its components using a graph notebook. All graphs need to have a title at the top of the graph, labels for the horizontal line (x axis) and the vertical line (y axis), representation of the data (bar, double bar, etc.). They collected the data by using a survey and creating a chart to record the information.

      October 28
Students had to brainstorm what made a good survey question and then put their own questions up to the criteria. Make sure your questions are completed to be used to collect data on.
